What Is a Conservative?

*Posted by Winston Hottman

What is a conservative? What are the advantages and dangers of convervatism? These are important questions that are rarely asked. In a recent radio broadcast on For Christ and Culture, Dr. Barry Creamer takes up these questions. Whether you’re a conservative or not, I think you’ll benefit from the discussion.

For a historical overview of modern conservatism, I recommend Russell Kirk’s classic, The Conservative Mind. Or if you want a brief summary of his ten conservative principles, see here.

This is really interesting because I see Jesus as being very liberal. Seems his primary goal was to tear down the walls of conservatism. I believe that original intent is the only thing truly worthy of being conserved. The problem is, original intent is very hard to find. This is one of the reasons that Jesus was so amazing. Jesus completely destroyed conservative practices, but conserved the original intent of those practices. The problem with us today is that we conserve small insignificant things because we don’t truly understand the original intent. For more, read John 7:21-24
